by Ananda Kannangara

Royal College, Colombo will pass another milestone on September 28 with the launching of an important Environment Vigilance program under the theme Rajakeeya Suparisara.

The program which is a brainchild of the School Development Society (SDS) will be conducted on the directive of Principal, Royal College H. L. B. Gomes. The SDS is expected to continue the program every four months.

Speaking at a press briefing held at the College Auditorium, Principal Gomes highlighted the importance of launching such a program by the SDS, considering the needs of at least 8,000 students at Royal College and said that under the program the 38 acres land where the College is located can be cleaned.

"Under this massive environmental cleaning program, we expect to introduce several garbage disposal methods and also to refurbish buildings including toilets", he said.

Referring to the recently concluded mosquito eradication program, the Principal said the program was very successful due to the

co-operation extended by present and old boys and also well-wishers.

In addition to the present and old Royalists, the "Rajakeeya Suparisara" program will be assisted by several other associations and institutions including the Royal College Union, Colombo Municipality, Prisons Department, parents, teachers, well-wishers and also several private sector cleaning services.

We can help a large section of students not only to carry out their educational activities in a much better environment but also to improve their other extra curricular activities such as sports by organising such a program every quarter of the year after September 28 and 29", he said.

"With the current mechanised lifestyle, a greener educational village is extremely important for students to develop their minds, attitudes and skills", he said.

Main organiser Rajakeeya Suparisara program, Nalin Attygalle said that their main objective was to collect at least Rs. one million in the initial stage of the program, scheduled for September 26.

Program Organiser M. Mathaiz said that Rs. 150,000 had already been collected from the present and old Royalists and all future donations made by individuals or any other organisations will be credited to the College Environmental Account, controlled by the SDS.

Program Chairman Nimal Chandrasiri said that all donations, made towards the program will be used to clean the school buildings and other infrastructure facilities such as toilets and the environment and not to construct new buildings.

Royal College Vice Principal S. P. Senarathne and Mrs. C. L. Attygalle were also present.
