Within 48 hours of the commencement of direct peace talks in Thailand, Sri Lanka has received assurances of over Rs. 1 billion in foreign aid by several major Donor Countries, Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando told the Daily News yesterday. Australia, Germany, Japan, Switzerland and the European Union has pledged more support, mainly to develop the North and East following the commencement of peace talks on Monday. The assistance will be for demining, resettlement and provision of food and drinking water projects. "It is like a dam has burst and showering our country with massive influx of foreign aid and assistance.' Minister Fernando said. "This had been waiting to come. But due to the shortsighted policies of our former leaders and narrow thinking it was averted." "And now with the leadership of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and successful first round of peace talks confidence has grown remarkably and we expect more aid from other countries shortly."
