PM meets Christina Rocca

Assistant Secretary Christina Rocca held discussions with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in New York on the current political and economic situation of Sri Lanka.

Rocca complimented the Prime Minister for the genuineness shown by his government to bring the LTTE to the negotiating table.

The Prime Minister enlightened Rocca on the need for development activities in arriving at a political solution for the ethnic conflict.

Wickremesinghe stated that if development could be expedited with emphasis on the North-East, the journey towards a political solution could be accelerated. Financial aid and other resources for development was also discussed.

"The Bilateral Double Taxation Agreement" between the United States and Sri Lanka would be signed on September 20. Rocca said it would be a fillip to strengthen relations between the two countries.

Chief Administrator of the United Nations Development Programme Mark Brown, in his meeting with the Prime Minister, said that commencing peace talks was a beginning of a new era for Sri Lanka.

He said the peace process would boost the confidence of US investors in Sri Lanka, which should make use of this opportunity to identify new areas for US investments.

Frank Wisner, a leading insurance personality and a consultant for the American Insurance Group (AIG) met Prime Minister Wickremesinghe Tuesday morning. They discussed the possibility of US investments in Sri Lanka's insurance industry.

Wisner mentioned that they are interested in acquiring comprehensive knowledge regarding the ceasefire, Sri Lanka's peace process and economic policies.

"These are the key factors we consider when deciding on investing in Sri Lanka. We are ready to invest in Sri Lanka after closely examining these factors," Wisner said.

A special religious ceremony was organised at the New York Buddhist Temple to bless Prime Minister Wickremesinghe.

This ceremony was organised under the guidance of the Chief Incumbent Ven. Kurunegoda Piyatissa with the Sri Lankan community in New York.
