US to review Tiger ban after success of Thai talks SATTAHIP, Thailand, Monday (AFP) - The United States will review its ban on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) depending on the outcome of peace talks which opened here Monday, the US ambassador to Thailand said. Ambassador Darryl Johnson said Washington supported the Norwegian-arranged talks which opened here, but Washington's 1997 proscription of the LTTE would not be lifted soon. "We will discuss that in the context of the outcome of the peace talks," the ambassador said after the official launch of the talks at the Ambassador City resort hotel near here. "A process has begun and we hope it will succeed." The United States designated the LTTE a "foreign terrorist organisation" in October 1997 and further tightened the grip on their fund raising activities following the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington. India, Britain, Canada and Australia have also outlawed the Tigers. |
