by Uditha Kumarasinghe The Agriculture Ministry for the first time will introduce a 10- year National Policy on agriculture this month to develop the agriculture sector under a systematic plan. The proposed policy has been formulated with agri scientists, farmers and administrative officers. The ministry has sought expertise of Indian and Israeli scientists, a Ministry official told the Daily News yesterday. Recommendations of the National Agriculture Policy will be implemented for 10 years from 2003. Agriculture Minister S.B. Dissanayake said the policy is not a political programme and its intention is to make Sri Lanka self-sufficient. "The commitment of officers and farmers is essential to make this programme a success. If the programme can achieve at least 80 per cent success, Sri Lanka can again become the Granary of the East, he said. The National Policy, once submitted for Cabinet approval, will be introduced to farmers in September. |
