Kalutara residents lead in protecting nation

The people of Kalutara have always been in the forefront in protecting the nation during a crisis, Daya Rohana Atukorala, senior lecturer, Colombo University said.

Speaking at a meeting to form the Bodhi Maga Foundation Fund to help develop the Buddha Sasana and Buddhist education, he said the fund can be used for national development.

The Bodhi trust contributed Rs. 10 million to inaugurate the fund. Ranjith Wijewardana donated Rs. 50,000 as first contribution. Another two donated Rs. 5,000 Ven. Udugama Buddharakkitha Mahanayaka of the Asgiriya Chapter of the Siyam Maha Nikaya presided and administrated pansil. Atukorala said Dhamma knowledge for children is essential.

It is important that every cent of the fund is used wisely. One should not forget that the society is built on four pillars, temple, school, media and family unit, he said. This step taken by the Kalutara Bodhi Trust should be emulated by other organisations in Sri Lanka, Atukorala said.

Nehru Gunetilaka, President Council and Chairman of the Bodhi Trust Kalutara, said his desire is to help Buddhist children improve their religious education and help the development of daham pasala education by providing assistance such as books and other material.

Ven. Gonaduwa Gunananda Thera, Bodhi-Trust member Indradasa Hettiarachchi and Chitra Mendis also spoke.
