Cricketers, beauties to discover 'Exciting Colombo'

by Tharika Goonathilake

It's not just the cricket that will be the talk of the town today but a novel public relations exercise to promote Colombo as a City with much to offer.

Titled 'Exciting Colombo' the grand event is being held at the Mount Lavinia beach to welcome the 12 cricket teams, Miss Tourism International pageant members and over 200 officials who are in Sri Lanka for the ICC championship Trophy and the international pageant.

"Over 40 countries are represented by the pageant members and the cricket teams. Our goal is to provide them with a glimpse of what Colombo can offer visitors by way of good food, entertainment and other attractions," Tourist Board Chairman Paddy Vithana told the Daily News yesterday.

According to him, Colombo is a stopover in many of the destination promotional packages as well as on most tourists' agendas but the City is yet to be 'discovered' for its array of entertainment, shopping, restaurants and other opportunities.

"We are marketing Sri Lanka as a destination in a big way but Colombo with its many facets is an attraction by itself.

"However, Colombo is yet to gain the kind of reputation it truly deserves. The aim of this exercise is to give these visiting teams and participant members a taste of the City's attractions," the Chairman said. Accordingly, the `Exciting Colombo' will have a miniature Colombo look-alike atmosphere, with Sri Lankan and international food stalls, entertainment outfits, competitions and other promotional spots to promote Colombo in true style.

The event is being hosted by the Ministry of Tourism, Board of Investment, Ceylon Tourist Board and the Mount Lavinia Hotel.
