PM thanks Vajpayee for Indian support

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said that he highly valued the strength and support received from Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee and his government in carrying forward the peace process and the economic development effort of Sri Lanka.

The Prime Minister who met Vajpayee at the New York Palace Hotel in USA on Sunday night, also briefed the Indian premier on the progress of the peace process.

Vajpayee is in New York to attend UN session.

He also briefed Vajpayee on the manner in which the Indian loan of Indian Rs. 100 million will be utilised for development activities in Sri Lanka.

During the talks, the two leaders also stressed the need to further strengthen mutual trade ties between the two countries.

The Prime Minister also met Agnes Van Hoeven, Minister of Development Cooperation of the Netherlands, who commended the Lankan government for its peace moves. The Netherlands Minister promised more aid for reconstruction of the North-East and offered Dutch expertise for de-mining.

The Prime Minister said the government plans to establish a 'de-mining authority' to expedite the clearing of landmines.

Prime Minister Wickremesinghe also met Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jia Xnan. They discussed the peace process in Sri lanka and bilateral relations. The Chinese Minister expressed he hope that peace talks would be successful.

The Premier visited 'Ground Zero' the site in New York where the World Trade Centre stood before it was destroyed in a terrorist attack on September 11 last year.
