As business opportunities are growing in the North and East, more private sector banks are opening branches for customers in the once war ravaged regions of the country.

Seylan Bank opened its 92nd branch in Trincomalee recently as part of its expansion into the region. The financial giant Ceylinco Group already operates eight offices in Trincomalee providing financial services to the people of the area.

Chairman Seylan Bank Lalith Kotelawala said that eight Ceylinco Group companies were set up in Trincomalee. He said through these he envisages offering services in banking, financial services, travel, housing loans, leasing, life insurance and many more services.

The Deputy Chairman of the Bank, R. Renganathan said that it was his personal dream coming true to see the bank open a branch in his own home town. Director/General Manager/CEO Mrs. Rohini Nanayakkara said that Trincomalee is the virtual capital city of the East, and best known for its safest and most picturesque natural harbour in the world. Among other things, it was also popular for the Koneswaram Hindu Kovil on the famous Swami Rock, the Buddhist Temple of Seruwila, the beaches, hot water wells and much more.

The Branch is a fully automated linked branch with an ATM machine enabling customers of the bank to have access to their accounts from other parts of the country. Customers can go to the counters of one branch while actually holding their accounts elsewhere and transact their banking.

The ATM facility also enable customers using the visa electron credit card to utilise their credit card facility from any of the 650,000 teller machines found worldwide. Mrs. Nanayakkara said that Seylan Bank's Trincomalee Branch is a fully fledged branch capable of providing a range of services which include current accounts, savings accounts, deposit accounts, leasing, fund transfers, inward remittances, encashment/issue of travellers cheques/foreign currency, investment in government securities, NRFC/RFC accounts, lending, project financing and micro financing with a focus on providing financial services to the poor within the rural communities.
