CILT support in National Transport Day celebrations

The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) is playing a vital role in organising the "National Transport Day" celebrations together with the Ministry of Transport on October 4.

The objectives of CILT are to support the development of transport professionals through an internationally recognised education and training program to provide up to-date information on transport issues to its members and also to play an active and influential role in shaping transport policies.

The National Transport Day organised by the Ministry of Transport highlights safety, improvement and modernisation that have taken place or given attention to in the transport industry/sectors to the public and the country as a whole.

The ceremonial opening of the Transport Day will take place on October 4 at 3 p.m. at Sausiripaya. Minister of Transport Thilak Marapana will be present. CILT together with Sri Lanka Central Transport Board, National Transport Commission, Sri Lanka Railway, Commissioner of Motor Traffic and Sri Lanka Police have arranged a series of competitions to commemorate the National Transport Day.

The CILT is conducting an essay competition among year 11 school children. The topics are:

* Pedestrian Movement and Traffic Accidents;

* Pupil Transportation - Problems and Solutions.

The CILT will also present awards on behalf of the Ministry of Transport to the Best Transport Company, Best Innovation in Transport and Best Research Project in Transport.

The SLCTB, NTC, SL Railway, CMT and SL Police will also recognise: Best driver of the peoplised bus companies, Best driver of private buses; Best Railway Staff; Best Motor Traffic Staff; Best Traffic Police Officer. The CILT also will hold its annual sessions on October 5 under the patronage of Minister of Transport Thilak Marapana to coincide with the National Transport Day celebrations.

The theme of the day would be Policy Formulations. Eminent speakers have been invited to speak on this day to convey their recommendations for improvement in the Transport Sectors and to make the public aware of same.

Dr. Amal Kumarage will speak on "Global Trend in Transport Policy - what can we learn?

Dr. Ajantha Perera will speak on "A Framework for Private Sector Participation for Public Transport" whilst Dr. Mahesh Jayaweera will speak on "Noise Pollution on Vehicle Transport" and Dr. Victor Mendis will speak on "Pollution Exhaust Emission of Automobiles". There will also be papers presented on "Road Safety and Policy To Take Advantage of Global Aviation" by T.L.N. Fernando and Dr. Saman Bandara.

Rohan Abeywickrema will speak on "Policy to Take Advantage of Global Maritime Business in Sri Lanka".

The CILT has recognised the fact that "Progress in any sector can be achieved only with a good foundation of knowledge" thus, to keep in line with this motto CILT recently launched its educational program with signing of an MoU with Polytechnic Limited. Study courses are being held at the Polytechnic to prepare for the examination conducted by CILT International in the U.K.
