Matale Comb. Schools in major upset

Matale Schools Combined team created a major upset when they beat the more fancied Wesley College by 12 points (1 goal, 1 try) to nil to steal the honours on the first day of the Singer SriLankan Airlines Rugby Sevens 2002 organised by Kandy Sports Club and sponsored by Singer Sri Lanka and Sri Lankan Airlines and co-sponsored by Connaissance De Ceylan's Le Kandyan Hotel which got under way at the Bogambara Stadium, Kandy yesterday.

Isipatana, St. Sylvesters, Royal, St. Peter's, Thurstan, Vidyartha, Dharmaraja and Kingswood have entered the quarter-finals of the Schools Cup championship.

Wesley, St. Anthony's and Trinity find themselves in the Plate Championship.

St. Sylvester's College did well to beat Sabaragamuwa Combined School by 44 points (2 goals, 6 tries) to nil. St. Sylvester's skipper Jagath Wickremasingha scored 4 tries including a hat-trick while A. T. Perera, C. Nawarunna, C. G. Silva and Indika Abeyratne scored a try each and the last named adding the extra points of two of the tries. Trinity College continued their dismal performance this season when they were beaten 7 - 27 by Dharmaraja College who obtained their points through a goal and 4 tries. Try scorers for the Rajans were S. Udayakumar (2), A. Ambuwangala (1), S. Hettiarachchi (1) and S. Udayakumar (1). For Trinity Niroshan Gunawardena scored the try.

In another interesting match Kingswood College held St. Peters College to a 12 all draw with both teams obtaining their points through a goal and a try. For the Peterites Mahesh Fernando scored both tries while for the Kingswoodians Eranda Weerakoddy and F. Marija scored a try each.

Isipatana beat Matale Combined Schools 52-0, Wesley beat Thurstan 20-10, Royal beat Ruhunu Combined Schools 40-12, Dharmaraja beat Trinity 27-7, St. Anthony's beat Sabaragamuwa Combined 36-0, Vidyartha beat St. Sylvester's 19-0, St. Peters beat Ananda 14-0, Kingswood beat St. Thomas 29-12, Isipatana beat Thurstan 19-12, Matale Combined Schools beat Wesley 12-0, Royal beat Trinity 14-12, Dharmaraja beat Ruhunu Combined 17-0, St. Anthony's beat Vidyartha 10-5, St. Sylvesters beat Sabaragamuwa Combined 17-0, S. Thomas beat St. Peters 12-5, Kingswood beat Ananda 24-7, Isipatana beat Wesley 19-0, Thurstan beat Matale Combined 45-0, Royal beat Dharmaraja 22-5, Trinity beat Ruhunu Combined 26-12, St. Sylvester's beat St. Anthony's 19-7, Vidyartha beat Sabaragamuwa Combined 50-0, Kingswood drew with St. Peter's 12-12. Ananda beat St. Thomas' 33-12. The tournament continued today at 8.30 a.m.
