Rs. 198 m aid for N-E schools by Rashomi Silva NORAD and the European Union will provide Rs. 198 million in financial assistance to rehabilitate 132 schools in the North and East, earlier occupied by the army. The aid will be given on the initiative of Minister of Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Refugees Dr. Jayalath Jayawardana, the ministry announced yesterday. Nearly 70,000 students will benefit from the rehabilitation project. Most displaced families were not willing to go back to their home towns as they were not assured of proper and continued education for their children. The implementation of the rehabilitation of the schools will vary from six to 18 months. The schools and the surrounding areas will be de-mined before the classrooms are repaired. The rehabilitation programmes include providing laboratory facilities and construction of new buildings. |
