At least 40 policemen killed in Nepali rebel attack NEW DELHI, Sunday (Reuters) At least forty Nepali policemen were killed and 15 wounded when Maoist rebels fighting against the constitutional monarchy attacked a police post in eastern Nepal, a minister said on Sunday. A group of rebels attacked the Bhiman police post in Sindhul district, 150 km (93 miles) east of the capital Kathmandu, late on Saturday night, officials said. There were about 70 policemen there at the time. "We have reports of forty policemen dead and 15 wounded. We don't know the fate of others," Junior Home (Interior) Minister Devendra Raj Kandel told Reuters. The communist rebels, fighting to set up a one party communist republic since 1996, have been blamed for several bomb attacks in and around the capital since the end of a state of emergency last month. Officials said reinforcements have been rushed to the site of the attack but the rebels had blocked the approach, making it difficult for security personnel to get there. |
