Bloomfield U-23 champions

by Dinesh Weerawansa

Bloomfield C&AC emerged champions of the BCCSL Inter-Club Under-23 division 1 cricket tournament when they beat Chilaw Marians on the first innings in their three-day final concluded at Saravanamuttu Stadium, Colombo yesterday.

Set to make 406 to win in 68 overs, Chilaw Marians made a bold reply, making 232 for one at close. The highlight on the final day's play were centuries by Arosha Perera (102 n.o with 19 fours and a six) and Janaka

Gunaratne (100 n.o. with 17 boundaries and one six).

Having lost Sajith Achintha for 15 early in their second innings, Chilaw Marians were able to frustrate the Bloomfield bowlers for the rest of the final day as Perera and Gunaratne shared an unfinished second wicket partnership of 207 runs. Chilaw Marians, who made just 99 all out in a disastrous first innings, painted a totally different picture in the second essay as Perera and Gunaratne were in full control. Bloomfield was good enough for them to win the title as the match did not produce an outright result. Earlier, Bloomfield made 190 all out in their first innings on day one - Friday.

Thus, Bloomfield accounted for the Under-23 division 1 title and received Rs. 250,000/-. But it was a creditable performance by Chilaw Marians as they became the first outstation team to make it to the finals, beating all odds. Chilaw Marians received Rs. 150,000/- as runners up.
