Russians clinch Intl' rugby sevens title

VVV Podmoskovie RFC from Russia put up a tremendous performance to beat Lloyd McDetmott Academy team from Australia by 55 points to 7 and clinch the Cup championship at the Isipatana College international seven a side rugby tournament concluded at Longden Place yesterday.

Podmoskovie RFC who were held to a 24 all draw by the same opposition during a preliminary round fixture produced a fine second half rally and collected their points from five goals and four tries. Lloyd McDermott managed to score only a solitary goal and were trailing 7-21 at half time.

In the Bowl final St. Anthony's College were beaten 28-31 at the hands of Brighton College from UK. The Antonians put up a splendid performance and led until the final minute before conceding the game in an absolute thriller. Brighton College kept their cool despite the pressure and collected their points from three goals and two tries.

Royal clinched the Plate championship while overcoming Thurstan 43 points to 5 in the final. Royal conceded a try very early in the game but settled down beautifully and turned the match in their favor running down seven tries out which three were converted.

Earlier in the Cup Championship quarterfinals Lloyd McDermott Academy from Australia scored a thrilling 19 points to 17 win over St. Peter's College after having led 14-5 at half time. The Peterites however opened scoring with a superb try from Mohamed Rinaz which went unconverted. But the team from Australia hit back almost immediately with two classic tries from Ella Garry and Brenton. The Peterites added two more tries to their tally with Rinaz completing a hattrick but they eventually ran out of time.

In another quarterfinal fixture Isipatana defeated their arch rivals Royal 12-7 after the scores were level 7 all at half time. In contrast New South Wales junior school and Podmoskovie RFC from Russia enjoyed two convincing victories at the expense of Kingswood and Thurstan respectively. In fact the Russian team maintained their impressive record in this tournament by outplaying Thurstan 59 nil while New South Wales had the better of Kingswood 22-7.

In the Cup semifinals the powerful Lloyd McDermott team put an end to Isipatana's dream of entering the final by winning their game 33 points to nil quite convincingly. After few anxious moments the team from Australia opened out and ran circles round the Isipatana team while collecting their points from four goals and a try. In the other semifinal Podmoskovie RFC from Russia recovered from an early setback to beat the more fancied New South Wales juniors 31-7 after having led 7-5 at half time.

In the Plate semifinals Royal pulled off a stunning 22 points to 17 win over St. Peter's with the match going into extra time. Royal led 12-10 at half time and the scores were 17 all at the end of full time. In the extra two minutes Dushanth Lewke scored the matchwinning try for Royal afer a good 25 metre dash through the left wing. In the other semifinal Thurstan recorded an upset 17-12 win over Kingswood after the scores had read 7 all at half time.

The Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Johnston Fernando was the chief guest and distributed the awards.
