JVP against Tiger de-proscription

by Uditha Kumarasinghe

The JVP opposes the government's decision to de-proscribe the LTTE without consulting the people, General Secretary Tilvin Silva said.

He said the party was holding talks with progressive forces and other organisations to form a common front to defeat the Government.

Addressing a media briefing in Colombo on Friday, the General Secretary found fault with the PA for not showing enough concern towards "the danger facing the country at present".

He urged the SLFP to act with responsibility at this moment to defeat the Government, instead of being pre-occupied with who is going to be its next presidential candidate.

Silva said lifting the LTTE ban will create a number of problems in the country and the UNP should shoulder the responsibility for this.

He said the Government had lifted the ban even while the LTTE had not given up its demand for Eelam which would give it an added fillip for its illegal activities.

The de-proscription of the LTTE has posed a serious threat to the country's security, Silva said.
