Invitations for screenplays

The Ministry of Small Holdings Development will screen 15 one episode teledramas and a 12 episode teledramas to educate the public about the services provided by the Tea Small Holdings Authority and the Tea Sakthi Fund.

The ministry media unit invited suitable screenplays from the public. The selected teledramas will be produced by the authority. Script writers will be paid. The theme of the script should touch the tea smallholdings, life styles, services rendered to the people through the authority and the Tea Sakthi Fund. The closing date is October 15.

Direct paddy purchase

The Maradagahamula Rice Producers' Association plans to purchase paddy directly from Mahaweli farmers. Organisation Secretary said the interference of the middlemen or brokers will be completely ruled out and would give farmers a fair deal.This is being done under the Mahaweli Integrated Development Project.

A spokesman for the Association of Maradagahamula Rice Producers said they had a conference with the Farmers' Organisation and representatives of the Mahaweli Authority Settlement areas.

He agreed not only to purchase farmer produce, but to give consultancy services in respect of farmers problems such as seed paddy, machinery, farmer training and other requirements of the farmers.

Bodies of two jumbos found

Two bodies of wild elephants were found at the Kallattikulama tank in Thiriyai in the Kuchchaveli Police area. During an ambush, Police took into custody three men along with two locally made guns and gun powder at about 3.30 a.m. in the area where the elephants were killed.

Investigations are on to find out if the suspects had any connection with the killing of the two wild elephants.


Rs. 60 lakhs in arrears

Ukuwela Pradeshiya Sabha traders have not paid Rs. 60 lakhs, the sabha's monthly meeting was told. The Governing and the Opposition agreed to take stern action against the traders.

The sabha unanimously decided that the defaulters would be advised to settle the arrears within 14 days.

Vinayaga Chaturthi

Vinayaga Chaturthi will be observed with a special pooja under the auspices of the Sri Muthukrishna Swami Mission.

It will be held at Saraswathie Hall, Bambalapitiya on September 10th, Tuesday between 6.00 a.m. to 9.00 p.m.

Special milk Abishekam to Vinayagar by all members of the public arriving before 6.30 a.m. followed by Homam etc. from 5.00 p.m. - Bhajan and 6.00 p.m. - special dance program "Namaami Ganesham" by Kalaimamani Ranganayaki Jeyaraman's troupe from India will take place.


Sarasavi Mela 

The "Sarasavi mela", a trade exhibition and fun fair jointly organised by the alumni Association, Alumni Organisation and Sarasavi Mithuro of the University of Colombo will be held from September 26 to 29 at the University Grounds at Reid Avenue, Colombo 7.

This trade exhibition is held in order to raise funds for student welfare activities and to improve infrastructure facilities at the University of Colombo.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Leader of the Opposition, Mahinda Rajapakse, Minister of Enterprises Development, Constitutional Affairs, Industrial Policy and Investment Promotion, Prof. G.L. Peiris and Tilak de Zoysa, Chairman, Ceylon Chamber of Commerce will be the chief guests on each day.

 

Convention of writers and artistes

The Centre for Performing Arts which has had many years of association with writers and artistes has organised a Convention of Writers and Artistes to be held on Saturday, September 14 at Sasakawa Hall, Colombo 3. Its objective is to provide a forum for writers and artistes to meet together and explore their own participation in the promotion of peace and humanism.

The main theme of discussion will be contribution of writers and artistes to peace building in Sri Lanka and around one hundred participants from all parts of the country are expected to be present at this event. The Centre for performing arts has consistently worked for peace through the creative arts, especially in the last two decades during which it strived to bring people together from both sides of the divide.


Merger of Mosque and Madrasa

The Board of Trustees of Al Bukhariyul Kadirie Thakiya (Jamiul Falah Jumma Mosque) 178, Layard's Broadway, Colombo 14, hereby informs the general public that Madrastahul Bahjah (Koranic Seminary) 180/79 A, Layard's Broadway, Colombo 14, situated adjoining the mosque will be henceforth managed by them.

This has been done as per the wish of the Board of Governors of the Madrasa and with the concurrence of the Waqf Board. An official ceremony to mark this event was held on Saturday 31st September, 2002, immediately after Asar Prayers, in the mosque. Al haj Moulavi Niyas Mohamed (Gafoori), Principal Ihsaaniya Arabic College, Colombo delivered a discourse at this function.


Seminar for medical officers

There are large number of specialities in medicine. Early selection of a suitable speciality is important for junior medical officers. A balanced distribution of doctors amongst specialists is important for the country, states a Sri Lanka Medical Association press release.

Since 1992, the Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA) has organised seminars annually on career guidance for junior medical officers.

The seminar of 2002 will be held on Sunday September 29 from 7.30 a.m. at No. 6, Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo 7, which is the Headquarters of the Sri Lanka Medical Association.

Twenty specialists will make presentations on their specialities. They will speak on entry criteria, training programs, opportunities/attractions, advantages/disadvantages and the future of each speciality.


Felicitation ceremony

A ceremony to felicitate Prof. Nandasena Ratnapala for his 40 year academic service towards the Sri Lankan Society and the development of literature will be held at the SLFI, Colombo on September 17 at 3.30 p.m.

Vice-Chancellor of the Colombo University Prof. Tilak Hettiarachchi will preside. Prof. Chandrasiri Palliyaguru of the Kelaniya University will deliver the keynote address.

The felicitation ceremony is organised by the Social Science and Humanities Department of the Sri Jayewardenepura University.
