Large crowd will support govt's peace process, says Azwer

A large crowd will gather in Colombo today, September 9 to support the peace process initiated by the government, said A. H. M. Azwer, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs.

The other parties of the United National Front and the people who value democracy will participate in this event. People from all communities, including Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims and Catholics as well as NGOs which value democracy and are committed to the peace process have expressed their support for peace and democracy, the Minister said.

Azwer was addressing UNP Parshada meetings in Paiyagala, Maggona, Aluthgama and Dharga Town in Kalutara District on the forthcoming Janabala Meheyuma. Kusman Silva, Beruwala Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman chaired the meetings.

The Minister said the Maha Sangha led by the Malwatte and Asgiriya Maha Nayake Theras have also blessed the peace process.

When members of all communities and organisations have expressed their solidarity, the JVP is planning to disrupt it through various unscrupulous methods. They should remember that those who shouted from rooftops for the past 60 years promising masses to establish a Govi Kamkaru government, eventually fell into the laps of the Bandaranaikes and the Senanayakes and even held Cabinet portfolios under their respective governments. If that was the fate of the 'mighty' leftists imagine where these 'mites' would end up. All attempts to destabilise the peace process would collapse against the advancing forces of the people, he said.

Even an attempt to get schoolchildren out on the streets was averted due to the Government's timely action. Thereafter, the JVP tried to disrupt Parliamentary proceedings by removing the Mace. The government MPs were able to put a stop to it, Azwer said.

"The JVP now has no leadership. Therefore, they have chosen Anura Bandaranaike to fill this void. I call it the 'Janadhipathi Vimukthi Peramuna'. They are planning to make Bandaranaike the President of this country through the JVP, not, the PA. Bandaranaike has claimed that it was the JVP that killed his brother-in-law Vijaya Kumaratunga. The President has also claimed that the JVP killed her husband. If that is the case, the citizens wonder how on earth could they establish a Government with these 'assassins'," the Minister said. The Janabala Meheyuma will be held to strengthen the position of the United National Front Government. Beruwala Pradeshiya Sabha Deputy Chairman A. M. R. Badiuddin, Provincial Council Members A. M. Yusuf, Jayantha Abeygunasekera and Pradeshiya Sabha Member Sunil Andradi and several others also spoke.
