Peace talks: GL, Milinda to brief US investors

The high profile Investors' Forum in New York on September 18 to which Premier Ranil Wickremesinghe is scheduled to lead the Sri Lankan Government- Private sector delegation, will get a first-hand briefing on the Thailand peace talks on September 16-18 from two Ministers who will fly directly to New York from Bangkok.

Political sources told the Daily News last night that Minister of Enterprise Development, Industrial Policy, Investment Promotion and Constitutional Affairs Prof. G.L. Peiris and Minister of Economic Reform Science and Technology Milinda Moragoda, two members of the delegation for the Thailand peace talks, will fly directly from Bangkok to New York on September 19 to give the investors a first hand account on what transpired at the Sattahip negotiations.

The high profile parley, under the theme:" Investment for Peace and Development" will get off the ground at the prestigious St. Regis Hotel in New York where Premier Wickremesinghe will address some leading US companies such as Microsoft, Ford, General Motors etc on the Government's peace initiatives and the scope for investment and development.

There will be over 30 Presidents/Chief Executive Officers/ Managing Directors of these US companies who will have breakfast meetings with the Sri Lankan private sector delegation.

There will be a matching exercise where Sri Lankan companies will meet their US counterparts in similar lines of business aimed at negotiations for joint ventures and investment possibilities and other commercial/ industrial possibilities.

The Prime Minister will be present at these negotiations which is expected to last over three hours and there will be proposals for the signing of the joint ventures and transfer of technologies on September 19 afternoon. Premier Wickremesinghe will also address a forum of high profile investment bankers on September 19 at the Regent Hotel, which borders Wall Street. Ministers Prof. Peiris and Moragoda will also address this forum revolving round the peace initiatives and the investment prospects.

There is also a function which is hosted by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) which will be attended by some eminent Fortune 500 companies about the development and investment prospects here. Foreign Minister Tyronne Fernando, Labour and Employment Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe, Education, Cultural Affairs and Human Resources Minister Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku and Interior Minister John Amaratunga will also make presentations in relation to their portfolios in the nation's development efforts at these fora.
