Maha Nayaka Thera dismisses allegations

Asgiriya Maha Nayaka Most Ven. Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Thera yesterday dismissed allegations that he had been bribed to maintain silence during the peace process.

The Maha Nayaka Thera was commenting on a statement made by Ven. Akuratiye Nanda Thera to BBC News.

He told reporters at a function in Kalutara that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe who visited the Dalada Maligawa had donated a certain amount of money to Diyawadana Nilame Neranjan Wijeyaratne.

"I was not there," the Maha Nayaka Thera said.

Diyawadana Nilame Wijeyaratne said the Buddha Sasana Ministry donated Rs. 50 million for the reconstruction of Dalada Maligawa.

"This money will be allocated for the construction of the Ran Viyana (Golden Canopy)."

Wijeyaratne said the Dalada Maligawa had received Rs. 120 million in public donations for its reconstruction, but this was insufficient for installing the Ran Viyana.
