Sarasaviya
fetes local film industry in October

Sri Lanka's most prominent film festival - the Sarasaviya Film Festival - will be held on a grand scale this year - after a lapse of four years - at the BMICH, Colombo on October 13. The 27th Sarasaviya awards presentation will be preceded by the Sarasaviya Film Festival Week at the Regal Cinema, Colombo from October 4 to 10.

It will feature seven films out of the 26 screened in 2001. They will be selected on the basis of box office ratings.

Thirty awards will be presented at this festival and cash awards will total Rs 500,000.

Among the awards are those presented to the best film, best director, best actor, best actress, best upcoming actress, best upcoming actor, most popular film, most popular actor and actress.

The Ranapala Bodinagoda Memorial Award will be presented to a journalist who had devoted his entire life towards the propagation of local cinema.

This will be the first such award.Other awards include; best script, best music director, best lyrics, best singer, best songstress, best art director, best make up, best editing, best cinematography, six awards for technical excellence.

Special awards will be presented for lifetime achievements in cinema (Rana Thisara) and for special contributions to film literature. The 26 films are; Hai Baby Hai, Kanyaviyage Rathriya, Jack and Jil, Oba Koheda Giye, Oba Magema Wewa, Kinihiriya Mal, Pissu Puso, Anantha Rathriya, Mahadenamuttai Golayo Rottai, Hai Hooi Babi Achchi, Johnson and Gonson, Balakamaya, Poronduwa, Me Mage Sandai, Wasanthe Kunatuwa, Joli Hello, Dinuma Kageda, Kumari Bambasara Handuda, Purasanda Kaluwara, Pasa Diya Gini Sulan Pahasa, Sundara Warada, Daru Upatha, Mathu Yam Dawasa, Sellan Kukka, Rosa Wasanthe and Aswasuma.

Winners will be adjudged by an eminent panel of judges .

Khemadasa honoured

Music maestro Premasiri Khemadasa will be honoured with a Honourary Doctor of Letters Degree by the University of Ruhuna. The Council of the Ruhunu University has decided to confer this degree at the annual convocation scheduled to be held on September 14.

Maestro Khemadasa set a landmark in the local musical arena and in film and stage dramas. Music in films such as "Senasuma Kothanada", "Golu Hadawatha", "Nidanaya", "Ahas Gawwa", "Bambaru Evith", "Hansa Vilak", "Thunweni Yamaya", "Siri Medura", "Agni Dahaya" and "Asani Warsha" and in dramas such as "Hitha Honda Ammandi", Nattukkari, Mahasara and Ekadhipathi stand testimony to his unmatched capability. He traversed a broad spectrum in the music field while providing modern knowledge of music to local patrons.
