Ex-soldier acquited in murder case by Sarath Malalasekera Kandy High Court Judge Sisira De Abrew acquitted ex-soldier Gamini Seneviratne when he was found not guilty to the charge of murder of Police Constable L.G. Wijeratne. Acquitting Seneviratne, the judge observed that the prosecution had not proved the charge beyond reasonable doubt. Seneviratne was indicted with having committed the murder of Wijeratne by shooting on August 1, 1988 at Yatiyalagala, Katugastota. The accused in a dock statement said he did not fire at anyone and that he had no revolver. After submissions by President's Counsel Wijaya Wickremaratne, Senior Defence Counsel and State Counsel Dhammika Ariyadasa, the Judge acquitted Seneviratne due to unsatisfactory evidence. Wijaya Wickrameratne, PC with Piyasiri Abeykoon appeared for the accused. |
