International Centre to boost exports soon

A permanent exhibition and trade promotion centre to facilitate the country's export industry will be set up this year, a Commerce and Consumer Affairs Ministry spokesman said.

Following a proposal made by Minister Ravi Karunanayake arrangements are now being made to set up the "Sri Lanka Expo Centre" that will function as the hub for all future export development strategies that will include marketing, promotion and global advertising.

The Ministry has already identified a prime location in Jawatta Road which has a floor space of approximately 75,000 sq. ft for the purpose. The Centre will enable local entrepreneurs who are in the export business to market their products under 'one roof'.

The Ministry will involve several leading private sector resources and capabilities towards this national export drive.

Similar centres established in other developed countries have been operating very successfully, sources said. A separate unit to facilitate trade inquiries and promotion will also be formed which will be managed by a Secretariat. This unit will be formed with representatives from government organisations, trade chambers, Customs Department, Export Development Board, the BOI and the Commerce Ministry.

The basic components of the proposed centre are: Permanent exhibition area, a separate section to conduct periodical exhibitions, a Convention Centre and a Trade Facilitation Centre.

Meanwhile, the Exhibition and Conference Centre (Pvt) Ltd. has made arrangements to manage and operate 13,344 sq ft space on the East and West Towers of the World Trade Centre Colombo.

This new venue in the heart of the city will provide facilities to hold exhibitions, conferences, product launches and other special events.
