by Ranga Jayasuriya

Police fired tear gas to disperse some 50-100 protesters who allegedly attempted to storm the Point Pedro Army Brigade Quarters yesterday morning.

The participants were engaged in a protest campaign demanding free passage through the High Security Zone tried to storm the Brigade Headquarters, breaking Army barriers and security posts, an Army officer told the Daily News.

The students of Hartley College and Methodist Girls College were also seen in the protest which took place 10.30 am, he said.

The police was called to quell the disturbance.

"Police fired tear gas to disperse the crowd," the official said adding that "the situation has been brought under control".

Two Army security posts have been destroyed in the protest, according to the Army.

The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) refused to comment saying it was waiting for information from monitors in the scene.

Meanwhile, the Valikamam Pradeshiya Sabha has been attacked and ransacked by an unidentified group. The new PS building built during Douglas Devananda's tenure as the Northern Rehabilitation Minister was scheduled to be opened yesterday.

Among the items damaged or ransacked are two computers, two printers, one airconditioner, a colour television set, a photocopy machine and five typewriters.

The Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP) has accused the LTTE for the attack, a charge denied by the LTTE's Jaffna office.
