President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga in a discussion with the representatives of All Island Muslim Moulavis Organization held at President's House yesterday, assured them that she will take steps to ensure the protection of Muslims in the North and East. The delegates discussed at length the various difficulties encountered by Muslims due to LTTE activities. They complained that the LTTE was resorting to extortion and abductions but the Security personnel were not keen to address these issues. They urged the President to intervene to prevent such incidents and protect the Muslims. Responding to their plea, the President informed the delegates that this situation has already been brought to the notice of the Security Council. If securities measures are inadequate she will bring such lapses to the attention of the Prime Minister and Chiefs of Security Forces for immediate action. |
