Police assures fullest cooperation to CMC

by Uditha Kumarasinghe

Murders and crimes have decreased in Colombo, DIG Bodhi Liyanage told a media briefing at the Colombo Municipal Council yesterday.

He said the number of crimes has come down after the establishment of the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD). The CCD has already conducted several operations within Colombo, arresting leading criminals.

Twenty six police motorcycle crews are used to control traffic. The Police have also issued mobile books to 2000 key places in the Colombo city. These places are being inspected three times per day. One hundred twenty Policemen have been used for night operations in the city, he said.

The DIG said the Police arrested several key drug dealers within the past few days. The Police in collaboration with the Colombo Municipal Council has made arrangements to commence rehabilitation programs in Colombo, Dematagoda, Kirulapone, Borella and Narahenpita areas for drug addicts.

Steps will be taken to evict hawkers in Pettah, Maradana and Borella pavements who have become a serious obstacle to pedestrians.

DIG Liyanage said the Police will extend the fullest cooperation to the Colombo Municipal Council to transform Colombo into one of the best cities in South Asia.
