Kotte to become a cleaner city

More than 150 minor employees attached to the Kotte Municipal Council have been warned to either work or stay back at home, following a major restructuring program drawn up to curb inefficiency and lethargy at the Council, states a press release issued by the Ministry of Commerce and Consumer Affairs.

"Many residents have been constantly complaining about the neglected state of garbage collection in Kotte MC area and the need to be more effective and efficient. Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Ravi Karunanayake has directed Kotte Mayor Ranjith Cooray to discontinue from service any one who does not wish to work.

Yesterday, (September 02) more than 150 workers staged a demonstration outside the Council protesting against the decision to handover garbage collection, sweeping of roads and cleaning of drains in the Kotte area to a private company commencing this month.

The Minister said that the new Council is now task oriented. There will be no room for anyone to sham. The people pay taxes, so we need to serve them diligently, he added.

According to Mayor Ranjith Cooray, the new arrangement with the private company will increase the output of the workforce by more than fifty per cent besides saving some money. The company will have to utilize Council workers and the garbage collection vehicles and they will have to be regular, the Mayor pointed out.

It has also been revealed that more than 193 minor employees have been collecting their monthly wages for the past 07 years without attending to their legitimate duty.
