Eight Lankan monks off to India

The Anagarika Dharmapala Trust Fund was created in 1930 by Srimath Anagarika Dharmapala for the propagation of Buddhism world-wide and the first batch of four Buddhist monks set out from Maligakanda Vidyodaya Pirivena in Sri Lanka in 1935 to carry out this mission in Europe.

Ever since, many are the Buddhist monks who traversed the path of this mission to propagate Buddhism from a number of centres including the London Viharaya, Buddhagaya, Saranath, Kolkata, Lumbini and Nawgar all of which are administered under the Dharmapala Trust Fund functioning with the Mahabodhi Headquarters located in Sri Lanka.

Keeping to the tradition,a batch of newly selected eight Buddhist Monks left the island recently from Maligakanda for the propagation of Buddhism in India.

Principal of Vidyodaya Pirivena, Ven.Akuretiye Amarawansa Nayaka Thera, Vice President of Indian Mahabodhi Society, Ven.Akuretiye Nanda Thera, Administrative Council members Dr.Nimal Samarasundera and Prasanna Jayasuriya, Dharmapala Trust Chairman, Attorney-at-Law Noel Wijenayake, Sunday Times Editor Singha Ratnatunga, Don Carolis Co.Chairman Rajiv Hewavitharana and Sudhammika Hewavitharana attended this historic occasion.
