by Asanga Warnakulasuriya The World Postal Day will be celebrated in 609 post offices islandwide starting from October 7 to 13. Minister of Mass Communication and Media, Imthiasz Bakeer Markar will be the chief guest at the opening ceremony. The Postal Department has organized several programs to mark the World Postal Day on October 9. As a part of the celebrations, the Department will appoint a postal consultant committee to propose development plans for postal service in Sri Lanka. The committee members will be chosen from the best customers in the area and they will be appointed by the Divisional Suprintendant. The Department also hopes to expand their independent "telemail"service to all sub post offices in the country where telegram facilities are available. The newly introduced telemail service which is currently available only to post offices will expand its two hour message delivery service to sub post office level by the popular demand. Islandwide art, essay and poster competitions will be held during the celebrations to mark the event and winners will be chosen at provincial level and later they will brought to national level. The theme for the poster competition will be "Broaden your horizon". Several seminars and field trips to the Central Mail Exchange, Rupavahini and Lake House have been organised to educate schoolchildren on the importance of World Postal Day. Deputy Post Master General(Operations), K.A.S. Senadheera told the Daily News, the Department will issue national identity cards through a one-day special mobile service during the postal day celebrations. They will also issue postal identity cards to all school applicants. Eleven Sub post offices in the Kaluthara District will be opened during the week. |
