Eight mobile services conducted countrywide

by Nadira Gunatilleke

The Social Welfare Ministry has conducted eight mobile services countrywide in order to provide a better service to the public under the direction of Social Welfare Minister Ravindra Samaraweera. About 3,000 people obtained relief during the seventh and eighth mobile services conducted at Badulla and Lunugala last month, Social Welfare Ministry Secretary Ms.Viji Jegarasasingam said.

Ms. Jegarasasingam said that most requests were for self employment or financial assistance to start self employment. The second pressing demand was for roofing material. Several educated disabled persons made requests for suitable employment. At present educated disabled persons are well aware of their own qualifications and talents. Hence, they are not satisfied with ordinary employment and they attend every mobile service demanding employment to suit to their educational qualifications. "At the moment we are working on the data collected during the mobile services in order to provide necessary relief", she added.

Several social welfare services were offered to the public by all the Departments and other institutions operating under the purview of the Social Welfare Ministry. Through these mobile services the people received an opportunity to get their work done without travelling to Colombo.

Those mobile services carried out several services including providing spectacles to the elders, providing wheel chairs, tricycles crutches and other aids for the disabled, issuing special identity cards for the elders, providing medical aid for patients, providing assistance to widows and disabled persons to start self employment. The Ministry will extend the program to the other areas shortly.
