Over 100 hurt 40 arrested in gunfight DHAKA, Monday (AFP) More than 100 people were injured and some 40 arrested in a fierce gunfight between rival ruling party supporters in Bangladesh, police and newspaper reports said Monday. The Ittefaq newspaper said the clashes erupted in the Munshiganj district near Bangladesh on Sunday between groups supporting rival candidates of the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) in forthcoming local elections. The gunfight left more than 100 people injured, including 30 who were hit by bullets, the newspaper said. Local BNP leaders could not be reached for comment. Local police would only say that 40 people had been arrested and the situation was now under control, although tensions remained high. |
