Army Boxers clinch clifford cup V. T. Raj reporting from Diyatalawa Sri Lanka Army Boxers regained the "Clifford Cup" at the Amateur Boxing meet concluded at the Gymnasium of the Sri Lanka Military academy at Diyatalawa on Sunday. The Amateur Boxing Association of Sri Lanka organised this meet with the assistance of the Sri Lanka military Academy at Diyatalawa. Hemasiri Fernando, the President of the National Olympic Committee graced the occasion as Chief Guest and gave away the awards. Slimline SC which bagged the trophy last year in the absence of the Army team, which withdrew, finished second and was awarded the Bandarawela Hotel Challenge Trophy. The disappointment for them was the disqualification of their Commonwealth Boxer R. M. A. B. Ratnayake on the final day due to being over weight at the weigh-in. Slimline SC produced three winners as against four winners by the Sri Lanka Army. One of the major upsets at this meet was the defeat of the Best Boxer at the Layton Cup SI Kumara of Police SC. Wakadapola of Police SC clinched the late Capt. H. K. Karunaratne Memorial Trophy awarded to Best Boxer whilst K. K. Jayasundera was declared the best loser. |
