In a letter addressed to the Speaker, Minister Amaratunga also urged the Speaker to refer the incident of the outbreak of cheer and applause which erupted in the public gallery after the announcement of the defeat of the motion, to the Parliamentary Privileges Committee for an inquiry. In his letter Minister Amaratunga expressed his doubt as to whether the incident was engineered by an interested party with the motive of insulting the sanctity of Parliament and bring the Government into disrepute. He points that on this occasion, a PA member of the Western Provincial Council was present with some of his supporters in the public gallery and that there was an allegation by a member of the Opposition that somebody hurled a pen at him. |
