Bosco to get Rs.5,00,000 monthly

by Uditha Kumarasinghe

Agriculture, Livestock and Samurdhi Minister S. B. Dissanayake has pledged to grant Rs. 500,000 monthly to the Don Bosco Technical College, Negombo through the Samurdhi Social Security fund.

On the invitation of Speaker Joseph Michael Perera, Minister Dissanayake made an inspection tour of the Don Bosko technical College recently. While on this tour, he pledged to grant this money to uplift the facilities of the college.

The Minister said necessary arrangements will also be made to ensure that this money is not withdrawn under any administration.

Dissanayake said the Samurdhi program intends to go a long way by collaborating with 800000 low income families. The intention of the Ministry is to provide required technical knowledge to the youth of Samurdhi beneficiary families by creating for them income generating avenues. In order to make this process a success, modern technology should be infused into the training institutions like Bosco. At present 450 students are undergoing training at the Bosco Technical College. Several job-oriented training courses are conducted by the college such as repair of boats, courses for mechanics, electronic and computer training. Annually 225 students pass out. Bosco will also guide students who complete their training towards self employments or to fill the vacancies in reputed institutions.

The Minister said youth labour is an essential component to develop the country. If a proper value is not offered to youth labour, the younger generation will be misled. That will lead to deterioration of the entire society. " Therefore transforming the younger generation into a more advantageous group for the development of the country is a challenge faced today."

He also appreciated the key role played by Bosco to provide training to youth of low income families by producing skilled youth to cater to the needs in the job market.
