from P. D. A. S. Gunasekera Ratnapura group correspondent The inland fishing industry in the Kegalle district, introduced by the SPC has proved a tremendous success according to SPC sources. The Inland Fish Culture has been started in 'fishing-ponds' from ten to forty perches each in extent under the patronage of the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council, in collaboration with the Fishing and Water Resources Ministries. The first such pond 40 perches in extent situated at Arandala in Harigala, had yielded a fish-harvest of about one thousand five hundred kilos of fish, to the fish-cultivator, at the end of a period of little over eight-months, fetching over one lakh of rupees, SPC - Minister Y. G. Padmasiri told the Daily News, adding that a part of the catch was sold at Rs. 100 per kilo to the local-consumers and the rest to the bidders from Colombo. Under this project a ten-perch fishing pond received fishing equipment valued at Rs. 10,000 from the SPC and the instruction and training from the Ministry of Fisheries. Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council is expected to improve the nutrition level of the low-income families, at the same time providing self-employment opportunities, a spokesman of the SPC, said. |
