Udathalawinna case: 8 suspects further remanded

The eight suspects held in Connection with the Udathalawinna General Election day massacre of ten persons were further remanded till September 6 by the Teldeniya Magistrate Miss P. Inoka Ranasinghe when they were produced in court on August 22.

The Magistrate also ordered all 11 suspects including former Deputy Defence Minister Anuruddha Ratwatte and his two sons Lohan and Chanuka Ratwattsse who are on bail to be present in court on the next date.

State Counsel Achala Wengappuli appearing for the CID submitted to court that the Chief Justice through an order issued on July 30 had named a three member trial at bar to hear this case in Colombo.

He requested court to further remand the eight suspects held in this connection and order all 11 suspects to appear before the trial-at-bar in Colombo when noticed. Mr. Wengappuli also submitted that the Attorney-General's report regarding the incident and the indictment had already been filed before the Kandy High Court and requested the Magistrate to order that they be forwarded to the three member trial at bar.

A CID report on the confessions made by the two suspect soldiers abducted at Mawanella was also submitted to court.

Attorney Sudath Karawita appearing for the two suspects said he accepted the CID report and submitted that the abduction case will be called at the Mawanella Magistrate's Court on September 11.

State Counsel Achala Wengappuli with Inspector Linton Ratnayake of the CID appeared for the prosecution. Attorneys Tirantha Walaliyadda, Sudath Karawita, Wijaya Wickremaratne and Ashley Herat appeared for the suspects.
