People's Bank robbery of Rs. 17.5 million : CID arrest 7 suspects, recover Rs. 10 million

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) investigating the Rs.17.5 million alleged robbery at the Anuradhapura People's Bank yesterday arrested seven suspects including two security personnel of the bank and recovered Rs.10 million of the stolen money.

Investigations directed by the acting DIG, CID revealed that the the main suspect in the robbery had left the country. One more suspect who is alleged to have been involved in the racket is evading arrest, the CID officers said.

The suspects now in custody had entered the bank on the night of February 5, 2002 and opened the safe with the assistance of two welders both residents in Anuradhapura Police area. The CID took the welders also into custody.

The special CID team yesterday recovered a sum of Rs. 10 million which was stolen from the bank from the possession of the suspects. Some of the money was unearthed near a residence of a suspect.

The CID also recovered several vehicles including a tractor which had been purchased from the stolen money.

The CID had deployed a special team to trace the suspect evading arrest.
