by Tharika Goonathilake A mega 'sound and light show', the first of its kind in the country is on the cards for Sigiriya, one of Sri Lanka's most famous ancient heritages and tourist attractions. A sound and light show, essentially a synchronisation of sound and light-a fusion of words, music, lighting and sound dynamics captured on sophisticated electronic equipment, is a vastly popular means of revealing history to capture the imagination of tourists and visitors, and is a major tourist draw in India, Egypt, Italy and Canada. The move, is part of a special destination marketing initiative undertaken by the Government and the Tourism and Travel sector. "The US$ 250 million project, aims at providing visitors night entertainment at its best in keeping with similar shows held in other destinations", Colombo Fort Hotels Ltd, Managing Director and Chairman (Hotels Sector) Channa Gunasinghe said yesterday. He said that hitherto several attempts were taken by the travel sector to launch a show of this nature for Sigiriya, but financial constraints led to its abandonment. However, the Tourism Ministry in collaboration with the travel sector is exploring avenues to raise the required funds now. USAID is also expected to assist in the proposed venture. Gunasinghe further said that a show of this nature will boost Sigiriya's lure with its unique concentration of 5th Century BC urban planning, architecture, gardening, engineering, hydraulic technology and art."It has already been declared as a World Heritage Site and is under review by UNESCO awaiting World's 8th World Wonder status," he said. |
