FCCISL seminar on China's entry into WTO: Challenges for SAARC countries

The Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka (FCCISL), the apex body of the private sector industrialists in Sri Lanka, through its International Affairs Division will conduct a single day public seminar on the subject of China's Entry into WTO on August 27 at the Hotel Ceylon Continental. This has been decided on following the large number of requests made by the private sector, mainly from the garment industrialists, importers and exporters, Banks, service oriented organisations and government officials.

WTO is a forum for countries to thrash out their differences on trade issues. The WTO agreement will be implemented by China in an effective and uniform manner by revising its domestic laws in compliance with the WTO agreement.

China is also in the process of implementing economic reforms and transforming its economy into one which is more market oriented.

The recent entry of China as a member of the world trade organisation has new challenges and opportunities for developing countries. China's entry into multilateral trade forum has increased competitiveness and forced developing countries, especially SAARC countries to assess the fallouts on its prospects in the global market with added competition.

Considering this, the SAARC Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) along with the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka (FCCISL) is taking an initiative to open the debate to review the potential impact of China's entry into WTO on SAARC region and seek practical solutions to this important change.

SCCI has nominated experts from SAARC countries Dr. Muhammad Zubair Khan-Consultant World Bank, Pakistan Bibek Debroy, Director, Research, RGF India Dr. Debapriya Bhattachariya, Executive Director, CPD Bangladesh M. G. Hewage and Consultant, Ministry of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Dr. Anwarul Hoda - ICRIEK, New Delhi to conduct the seminar.
