Lanka, Arizona to promote technology transfer in environment, investment and trading

By Charlie Herat

The United States - Asia Environmental Partnership (US-AEP) program headed by its Sri Lanka Country Director Dr. Ananda Mallawatantri has embarked on a project to establish a partnership between Sri Lanka and the State of Arizona in USA to promote technology transfer in the field of environment, investment and trading.

As the first step of this program a group of officials from the Arizona Department of Commerce in USA visited Sri Lanka in January this year to explore avenues for cooperation. This visit was reciprocated by a Sri Lankan delegation in end June consisting of CEOs of some leading Sri Lankan companies and some State officials headed by Dr. Mallawatantri.

The team consisted of representatives from Caltex Lubricants Lanka Ltd., Nikini Automation Services, Confifi Engineers (Pvt) Ltd., EML Consultants, Tech Waters (Pvt) Ltd., Challenger Lanka (Pvt) Ltd., Aqua Technologies (Pvt) Ltd., Chemical Industries (Pvt) Ltd., Horizon Lanka (Pvt) Ltd. Lakshman Jayasekara, Director General of National Physical Planning Department and Dr. Don S. Jayaweera, Deputy Director (Planning) of the Ministry of Transport, Highways and Civil Aviation represented the State sector. The Industrial Services Bureau (ISB) was the only regional organisation invited to participate in this visit and was represented by its Director Gamini Senanayake.

During this visit, the Sri Lankan delegation had the opportunity of meeting their counterparts to identify specific areas for future collaboration. The delegation was exposed to a wider spectrum of technologies, machinery and equipment and products for the improvement of air quality, waste water treatment and alternative energies.

To finalise some of the negotiations already initiated, a business delegation from Arizona and officials from Arizona Department of Commerce is expected in Sri Lanka in mid September this year under the sponsorship of US-AEP.

US-AEP along with the US Embassy in Sri Lanka is also making arrangements to organise a mini exhibition to enable the visiting delegation to exhibit and present new technologies to a wider group of Sri Lankan prospective business partners.

Once the ongoing negotiations are finalised, Sri Lanka will benefit immensely by having access to state-of-the-art technologies, equipment and products useful for environmental protection. ISB is actively involved in this program and will introduce such technologies to Sri Lankan industries.
