Seminar on 'Law, order and business'

The Law and Order Sub-Committee of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce will conduct a half day seminar on September 19 to address the deterioration of Law and Order situation in the country and how it is affecting business and foreign investment.

The seminar on 'Law & Order and Business' will discuss the following issues; Importance of Law & Order for the conduct of business "A number of cases had been reported in the recent past, of instances where unruly behaviour by employees had disrupted the conduct of business. This

has become a critical issue to most businesses today." Strengthening the Criminal Justice system "The factors which undermine the effectiveness and efficiency of law enforcement in Sri Lanka and which generally lead to a lack of confidence on the part of the public in the criminal justice system".

Difficulties in implementation. "There is reluctance among the public to report on issues of possession of firearms due to fear of retaliation and poor public perception on the confidentiality of the information provided to the Police." Speakers who are conversant with these subjects will be invited to make presentations. The presentations will be followed by a 'question and answer' session.

The resource persons include: W. T. Ellawala, Chairman-Law and Order Sub-Committee, Prof. M. T. A. Furkhan, Chairman, Confifi Group of Companies, Ranjit Abeysuriya, President's Counsel and DIG H. M. G. B. Kotakadeniya, Senior Deputy Inspector-General of Police (Crime, Criminal Intelligence & Organised Crime).

The Law and Order Sub-Committee is hopeful that through this seminar awareness could be created among the relevant officials and civil society of the importance of the Law and Order for the conduct of business. Law enforcement agencies such as Department of Police, Judiciary, Officers from the Attorney General's Department, other officials responsible for enforcing Law and Order within the country, members of the Chamber, civil society and the media will be invited to participate.
