Cavaliers edge out Joe-Petes veterans by Pelham Juriansz The Cavaliers sports Club led by former Sri Lanka "cap" Jayantha Seneviratne, edged out the Joe-Pete veterans by six wickets with just two balls to spare at the Peterite grounds, Bambalapitiya on Thursday, August 22(Poya Day)in the first of a what is hoped to be a series of encounters. The Old Joe-Pete combination led by star captain Bernard Wijetunga, got off to a rollicking start through the efforts of their left handed openers, Gary Goonasekera(105 n.o) and former Sri Lanka wicket keeper batsman, Amal Silva. Goonasekera was in stunning form getting his century in 78 balls. Jayantha Seneviratne bowled best for the Cavaliers capturing 3 for 44. Cavaliers in their turn knocked off the required runs with Bandula de Silva, former Cambrian and present Peterite coach scoring 75 backed up by Gerry Woutersz who chipped in with an undefeated 60. Basil Perera too helped the Cavaliers with a quickfire undefeated 24 inclusive of a massive six to finish off the match. Joe-Pete veterans 207/5 in 25 overs(Amal Silva 37, Gary Goonasekera 105 n.o, Jayantha Seneviratne 3/44). Cavaliers 213/4 in 24.4 overs(Bandula de Silva 75, Gerry Woutersz 60 n.o, Basil Perera 24). |
