Singapore-China clash in first semi-final

Bernard Perera reporting from Singapore

The hosts of the 30th Asian schools soccer championship, Singapore will face stiff opposition from runner up in Group 'A' China in the first semifinal at Yishun stadium 30 kms away from the city this evening.

The second semi final will be a clash between the top contenders for the trophy in the early stages South Korea and Thailand.

This meeting put one of them out of the contention. South Korea has a better record in the preliminary round winning all their four games to collect maximum points.

On the other side Thailand gained 10 points winning three games and drawing one game in the Group 'B' Malayasia which played in group B had gone down in the order when they lost to India and drew with Thailand. This made way for Singapore to push forward to secure the second spot.

Singapore will have to come out with everything in store if they are to topple the highriding Koreans in today's game. Thailand who also have ten points and goal aggregate of 22 face tough competition from China who have collected nine points but with a lesser goal aggregate of 13.

Thailand coach Kawin Kachandocha said China is a better side to play with. My boys will have to give out everything possible if we are to dominate in this game. I hope to make this a success along with my boys and to take away the cup.

Sri Lanka stood right at the bottom of the table with no points in Group 'B', but the bottom placed team in Group A Brunei managed to collect a point when they drew with Vietnam one all. Sri Lanka gave away total of 27 goals while scoring only a single goal, but Brunei managed to score 2 goals against 12.
