Suriyakumaran has described the views expressed by MP Lakshman Kadirgamar during his meeting with US Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage as representing "studied misses" and "half truths". The ex-Foreign Minister who is also the Advisor on International Affairs to the President had reportedly told the visiting Deputy Secretary of State that any Interim Administration must be deep-rooted in the Constitution and not have a life of its own which by implication would be a step away from a separate state. Prof. Suriyakumaran states that Kadirgamar had "let slip an opportunity to help than, as he has done, to hinder". If as Kadirgamar presumes what is needed is a fully adequate Constitution should he not have addressed this agenda as even more urgent than his first pious concern ?. Kadirgamar should know that our Constitutions have so far never genuinely accommodated the essentials of multiple and participatory government. "It would have been nice if he mentioned something also on this to the Deputy Secretary of State ?". Referring to Kadirgamar's views that talks other than the Interim Council be included in the Agenda Viz Human rights, Prof. Suriyakumaran opines that although this is laudable the abuses of all sides and not one should be considered. |
