News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Call for TU reps in talks delegation by Rajmi Manatunga Leftist political parties have proposed that the government delegation for Thailand peace talks include representatives of trade unions to represent the working class of the country. Speaking to the Daily News, Leader of the Democratic Left Front Vasudewa Nanayakkara said it was essential that the government delegation comprise all races and peace loving social segments instead of a handful of ministers who represent the ruling party. "It is important that the ultimate solution safeguards the rights of all citizens of Sri Lanka, especially the Muslims and Sinhalese in the North-East. There must also be representation of workers' unions and intellectuals as the majority of Sri Lankans belong to the working class irrespective of racial differences," he said, adding that the government delegation for the talks should not be confined to politicians. Leader of the New Left Front Dr Wickramabahu Karunaratne said it will be 'good' to have a trade union representative in the delegation because the outcome of the discussions will be shared by all Sri Lankans, most of them working people. The DLF leader said it was necessary to implement the MoU between the government and the LTTE properly and to investigate violations of the agreement to pave the way for successful talks. |
