Chief Adhikarana Sanga Nayaka appointed

by Richmond Wijesekera, Bentota group correspondent

Ven. Katuwatte Sumanasara Thera, Viharadhipathi, Sri Sumanarama Vihare, Mullegoda, Induruwa who was appointed as the Chief Adhikarana Sanga Nayaka of Bentara Walallawiti Korale with the honorary title "Sahithyachariya Sri Indasumana" by the Karaka Sanga Sabha of the chapter was presented the act of appointment by Most Ven. Rambukwelle Sri Dharmarakshitha Maha Nayaka Thera of Kandy Malwatu Maha Vihara Chapter at a ceremony recently.

Ven. Pallathtara Sumanajothi, Deputy Sanga Nayaka Thera of the Southern Province, who chaired the meeting said that the new Sanga Nayaka was appointed at a comparatively young age, when usually older priests were getting Nayaka posts. As such much service could be expected from him.

Ven. Thera further said that right from the days of Lord Buddha, state patronage for Buddhist activities was readily available and even later King Dharmasoka too provided all assistance to propagate Buddhism. Here in Sri Lanka too the Sinhalese kings gave a place to Buddhism and fostered and preserved it admirably.

The Minister of Tea Small Holdings Susantha Punchinilame said that it was late President Ranasinghe Premadasa who appointed the Minister of Buddha Sasana for the first time in the history of Sri Lanka. From that Ministry yeoman service was done for Buddha Sasana. The opening of liquor bars at every other junction by the previous PA government had brought about the breakdown of morals in society and the present administration had stopped the issue of liquor licences when it came to power. On behalf of the government Minister Punchinilame wished the new Sanga Nayaka Thera a long life.

Galle District MP Gayantha Karunatilake in his speech said that he had known Ven. Katuwatte Sumanajothi Nayaka Thera for a long time. He was a very active religious and social worker. As a general secretary of Bentara Walallawiti Korale (West) Sasanaraksaka Balamandalaya he had rendered a yeoman service to the development of 'Daham Pasalas' in the area.

Former Minister and Deputy UNP leader, Rupa Karunatilake noted that younger monks should be made possible to take up appointments as Nayaka Theras. Ven. Katuwatte Sumanasara Nayaka Thera said he was grateful to the Mahanayakas and Maha Sanga for his appointment. He also said peace, unity and harmony should be established in Sri Lanka soon.

Ven. Nahalle Indrasiri Nayaka Thera, Ven. Malliwatte Ananda Nayaka Thera, Ven. Uhanowita Sumanasiri Nayaka Thera, Ven. Dr. Talawe Sangaratana Thera, Ven. Pinikahane Indrasara Thera, Divisional Secretary, Bentota, U. D. C. Jayalal, Galle District MP Jayantha Jayaweera, Gampaha District MP Ravindra Randeniya, Ven. Yatadolawatte Ariyawansa Thera, Mr. Amarabandu de Alwis were also spoke.
