Timely representation for port development in Sri Lanka

ICS Sri Lanka is taking the lead once again by bringing Industry Experts locally and abroad to make presentation in their annual International Seminar to be held on the 21st and 22nd October, 2002 at the Hotel Lanka Oberoi. The theme "Sustainable Development Through Ports and Shipping" is very appropriate at a time when the government is embarking on developing not only Western Province but also other major provinces in the country to meet the challenge of globalisation.

ICS is very confident of a successful seminar which will result in a white paper for the government and arrangements are being made to get down Mohamed Sidik Osman CEO of Port of Tanjung Pelepas Malaysia who revolutionised the container world by grabbing two big lines out of PSA last year. His experience/expertise in port management and marketing will be vital for any port embarking on major development project.

Apart from him there are many other experts who will address the gathering and ICS is hopeful of good response from the Industry, Exporters and Freight Forwarders.

The discussions with Ceylon Chamber of Commerce new CEO, Renton de Alwis for the seminar has received very positive response and ICS is of the view such encouragements from the Chamber is vital for the success of such an event.

Sri Lanka Ports Authority has taken the lead, in coming as a co-sponsor together with Chairman of Master Divers who is promoting the Hambantota Port to ensure that this seminar is a success. Apart from them, SAGT/DIALOGGSM has shown keen interest to assist ICS in making the seminar a success.

New CASA Chairman has encouraged ICS in their endeavour and this co-operation/partnership is very essential for the development of shipping and ports.

Rauf Hakeem will grace the occasion as the chief guest, whilst Norwegian Ambassador Jon Westborg will be the guest of honour. The key note address will be delivered by none other than internationally renowned Bradman Weerakoon, Secretary to the Prime Minister.

ICS is the only professional body (member of OPA) in the field of shipping conducting professional Examinations and now embarking on a New project to Train Advanced Level Qualified School leavers thereby making them employable.
