Koreas to hold new talks on families and economy

SEOUL, Aug 14 (AFP) - The two Koreas agreed at high level talks this week to hold new negotiations to organise family reunions and economic cooperation, YTN television news said Wednesday.

The report, which gave no source, said negotiators from the North and South had agreed to hold Red Cross talks on September 15 to organise new reunions of families kept apart since the 1950-53 Korean War.

It added that economic cooperation talks would be held from August 26 to 28.

Officials could not confirm the report. A South Korean unification ministry official said the heads of the delegations had not yet started their final meeting and hinted that the reported new talks were not certain.

"This should be a package deal," said the official indicating that if the South's demand for military talks was not agreed then other talks could be at risk.

The two sides started their first high level talks in nine months on Monday. The North Korean delegation is due to return to Pyongyang on Wednesday.
