87th National Tennis Championship begins on August. 12

The 87th Sri Lanka National Tennis Championships will be held at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association from 12th to 18th August 2002. It is one of the premier events in Sri Lanka tennis tournaments calendar with a grade ranking status. Top players from all over the country are expected to participate.

We also hope to attract foreign entries like we have done in the past. A total of 15 events, 7 singles and 8 doubles events are to be worked off in open and veterans categories.

The open events are men's singles, men's doubles, women's singles, women's doubles and mixed doubles and the veteran events are singles over 35, over 45, over 55, over 65 men's singles and doubles and over 40 women's singles and mixed doubles. The following ranking points will be awarded at the 87th Sri Lanka Nationals as follows: Winner 300, Runner-up 200, Semi-finalist 150, Quarter finalist 100, Round of 16 50, The Tournament and Matches Committee Chairman, Mr. Tryphon Mirando informed, this year the nationals will be conducted in a very professional manner like in the international tournaments. All singles draws will be restricted to 32 entries. The rest of the participants will have to play qualifying rounds to obtain the entry into the main draw.

There will be 20 direct acceptances into the main draw based on the current ranking and 4 wild cards will be nominated by the tournament Committee at their own discretion and 8 players will qualify to the main draw.

The qualifying rounds will be played on 10th and 11th August 2002 at the SLTA. The new format introduced by the International Tennis Federation in the year 2002 will be experimented in these qualifying rounds, the "qualifying rounds will be played in the new deciding match tie break format. In a 3 set match, when the score is one set all, one tie break game shall be played to decide the match. This tie break game will replace the final set". Entries will close on 7th August 2002 at 6.00 p.m. at the SLTA.

The Sri Lanka Junior Nationals Tennis Championships 2002 will be held at the SLTA from 26th August to 1st September 2002.
