Udatalawinna massacre : Eight suspects further remanded

Eight suspects held in remand custody in connection with the Udatalawinna Election Day massacre of 10 people were further remanded till August 23 by the Teldeniya Acting Magistrate S. B. Madugalle yesterday.

The three other suspects on bail former Deputy Defence Minister Anuruddha Ratwatte and his two sons Lohan and Chanuka Ratwatte were present in court along with seven of the suspects in remand when the case was called yesterday.

The first suspect Ranjith Wijeratne was not present and prison officials submitted a medical report on his behalf.

Sudath Karawita, Counsel for the 23rd and 24th suspects raised the issue of the B report containing the confession made by Indika Wijeratne and Dhammika Siriwardena, the two suspects abducted at Mawanella which he said has not been submitted to court. State Counsel Achala Wengappuli said a separate case is pending in the Mawanella Magistrate's Court relating to the Mawanella abduction and the relevant B report will be submitted at the Mawanella Magistrate's Court when that case is called. Attorneys Tirantha Walaliyadda, Sudath Karawita, Ashley Herat and Vijaya Wickramaratne appeared for the suspects.

State Counsel Achala Wengappuli with inspector Linton Ratnayake appeared for the CID.
